Jamie Schneider wins SCT Championship
The Tartan's own Jamie Schnedier, Rick Schneider, Curt England and Shanon England have captured the 2008 Saskatchewan Curling Tour's Players Championship.  12 of Saskatchewan's top teams competed for the title of Tour Champion at the Tartan December 19th to 21st.  The 12 team round robin style event with two pools of 6 started Friday at 5:00 PM and wrapped up on Sunday.  Derek Boe and Al Schick recieved byes to the semi-finals after placing first in the round robin.  Jamie Schnedier defeated Steve Slupski and Derek Boe on the way to the final while, Kody Hartung defeated Josh Heidt and Al Schick to make the final.  Jamie Schneider made an open hit in an extra end to beat Hartung and claim the Tour Championship.  Access 7 shot the Hartung vs. Schick semi-final and final as part of their 'Rock the House' program.  Watch for reruns on Access 7 on Wednesdays and Sundays.   Check all the Results here.
NEW tartancurling.ca Website Features

You may notice some new features on the right margin of the Tartan Website.  These new features include advertising space, quick polls, curling quizzes and more.  To purchase advertising space on the website contact Scott Comfort at the Tartan Office.  The quick polls page will allow Tartan members to express their opinions, and the Curling Quiz feature will allow you to test your curling knowledge. 

Another Addition to the website is in the MEMBERS ONLY menu bar.  A Spare List page has been added to the website that will only be accessable after you SIGN IN.  This page will currently be used for Teams looking for Players for the 2008-2009 Season.  If you would like to add you team as looking for a player, add your name as looking for a team OR looking to spare contact the Tartan Office

Team Muir and Team Assman tie at Tartan Golf Tournament

The Tartan Golf Tournament was held on Saturday September 6th at the Murray Golf Course.  The major awards were are listed below:

  • Tournament Champions: Art Assman, Jeff Klein, Cam Leonard, and Dave Millar, AND Keith Muir, Howard Comfort, Carmen Gibblett, and Scott Comfort.  Both teams shot 64
  • Ladies Champions: Edith Hamlin, Jean Wesson, Fay Jackson, and Marg Hubbard 78
  • Mixed Champions: Brian Hill, Amber Holland, Heather Seeley, and Ron Kloschinsky 69
  • Men's Long Drive: Jeff Klein 333 yards

Regina Youth Christmas Bonspiel

The Tartan and Callie Curling Clubs hosted the Regina Youth Christmas Bonspiel from December 27th to 30th.  The bonspiel committee is would like to thank all the volunteers for the event.  The bonspiel results were: 

  • Senior Girls: Stephanie McVicar, Kari Kennedy, Kelsey Dutton, and Cori Derbert defeated team Paulsen 7-5
  • Senior Boys:  Catlin Schneider, Marc Seeley, Stephen Schneider, and JD Cole defeated team Heidt 4-2
  • Junior Girls: Alex Williamson, Ashley Williamson, Nicole Thompson, and Morgan Burns defeated Team Skjerdahl 7-3
  • Junior Boys: Kyle Batty, Conner Bjornson, Clayton Batty, and Spencer Ellis defeated Team Haines 8-1
  • Novice: Aaron Verbeem, Colton Lund, Kelly Oberkirsch, and James Garven defeated Team Duffy 9-3

Tartan Annual General Meeting

The Tartan's Annual General Meeting was well attended on Monday with 21 Shareholders and Members attending the meeting.  Those in attendance voted for FOUR new directors to the board from the SIX that were nominated.  Wil Sinclair and Dwight Nelson were re-elected and new to the board are Chris Krasowski and Carla Robinson.  The Tartan Executive stayed fairly consistent with the exception of Gordon Beck replacing Barry Dusyk as Treasurer.  Barry Dusyk and Brent Appel decided to step aside at the end of their terms.  The 2008-2009 Tartan Executive is:

  • Liane McLean - 1st Vice
  • Dwight Nelson - 2nd Vice
  • Gordon Beck - Treasurer
  • Jack Lax - Secretary
Senior Men's Playdown

The teams that will advance to the 2009 Senior Men's Southerns have been decided.  The six qualfying teams include:

Tartan Golf Tournament 09 at Flowing Springs

The Tartan Golf Tournament is Scheduled for September 12th, 2009 at the Flowing Springs Golf Course.  The tournament runs with tee-times (NOT Shotgun) with dinner and prizes to follow at the Tartan Lounge.  The tournament moved from the Murray Golf Course due to a scheduling conflict at the Murray.  The Tartan is currently collecting prizes for the tournament.  If your company would like to donate prizes we would greatly appreciate it if you would take the time arrange prizes for us.  The costs of the event are:

Grade Six Bonspiel 2009
The Grade Six Bonspiel is set for April 1st to 7th at all Clubs in Regina.  All Games will be at 4:00 PM.  There are 26 teams from all over Regina.  Click Here to see the Grade Six Bonspiel Draw.  Good Luck to all the Teams.
Saskatchewan Wins Canadian Fire Fighters

Regina Fire Department's Jeff Gartner rink are Canadian Champions.  Tied after 9, team Gartner stole one in the 10th against Northern Ontario to claim the title.  The 50th Canadian Fire Fighters Curling Muscular Dystrophy Hydrant Championships was held from March 27th to April 4th at the Charlottetown Curling Club in P.E.I.  Jeff Gartner, Bernie Bandur, Paul Comfort and Chris Rugg advanced to the Nationals after winning the Provincial Championships in Hudson Bay earlier this year.  Team Saskatchewan finished 1st in the round robin with an 8 and 2 record.  They defeated Northern Ontario in the 1st vs 2nd Page Playoff game to advance to the final where they defeated Northern Ontario for a third time.  Jeff Gartner was a long time Tartan member and Paul Comfort currently curls at the Tartan on Thursday nights on the Scott Comfort team.

Congratulations to Team Gartner - Canadian Champions. 

Summer 09 Events

The last summer event at the Tartan was Fly Ball Dog Races September 5th and 6th

Summer is over and the Tartan Curling Club changed from a curling rink to a hall from mid-April to the end of August in the offseason.  The Tartan hosted weddings, fly ball dog races, trade shows, garage sales, and of course the Scottish Pavilion for MOSAIC.  Below is a list of the Tartan Hall Details:

  • 20,000 square feet
  • 2,000 person capacity
  • 200 feet of curtains for smaller events
  • 400 chairs
  • 40 8' tables
  • 10 6' tables
  • staging for up to 16' x 20'
  • and more

For smaller events the Tartan lounge and boardroom are available to rent all year round.  The lounge has a capacity of 285 and is perfect for your smaller functions.  The Tartan boardroom seats up to 30 people and is ideal for your meetings, drafts or dinners.  For more information check out the Facility Rental page or contact the Tartan Office.

08-09 Tartan Aggregate Winners

The Tartan Curling Club Leagues are finished and the Aggregate winners have been determined.  The teams with the most points in each league is deemed the Aggregate winners.  Each player recieves a $25 gift certificate for use in the 09-10 season.  Congratulations to all the teams that had success this season at the Tartan.  The 08-09 Aggregate Winners are:

  • Monday Night - Mike Donison, Jake Ripplinger, Daniel Selke, and Gregory Shiplack
  • Tuesday Night - Bill Martin, Craig Martin, Doug Mountain, and Dwight Nelson

2009 SaskTel Men's Provincial Tankard

Two Tartan teams have qualified for the SaskTel Provincial Tankard in Meadow Lake.  Brad Law, Randy Semenchuck, Glen Hill, and Chris Semenchuck along with Jason Ackerman, Andrew Foreman, Curtis Horwath, and Ryan Sveinbjornson will face off against 14 of Saskatchewan's top teams.  In addition to the two Tartan teams two Tartan staff members will be in the field in Meadow Lake.  Scott Comfort, manager, plays second on the Callie's Dean Moulding team and Brennen Jones (pictured right), office/ice staff, is second on Brad Heidt's team.  In addition to the two Tartan teams, the other Regina teams include Team Al Schick (Highland), Team Dean Moulding (Callie), and Team Randy Bryden.

The entire 16 team field includes Brad Law, Jason Ackerman, Dean Moulding, Randy Bryden, Al Schick, Glen Despins, Brent Gedak, Doug Harcourt, Warren Hassall, Brad Heidt, Mark Herbert, Brian Humble, Joel Jordison, Cory Martens, Darrell McKee, and defending champion Pat Simmons.  The draw and results will be posted on www.saskcurl.com.

Three Tartan Teams at 2009 Ladies Provincials

Team Englot, Team Eberle, and Team McIvor did battle in Swift Current at the Provincials.  Team McIvor knocked out Team Eberle in the C semi-final and Team Englot in the C final.  McIvor went on to lose to Rene Miettinen in an emotional game.  Miettinen then defeated Amber Holland only to loose to Stephanie Lawton in the Final.  Congratulations to Team Lawton on winning the SaskPower Scotties Ladies Provincials.  The Tartan would like to wish them luck at Nationals.  The Tartan teams included:

Prevent 'Picks' in Your Games

Danny Lamoureux's latest 'Business of Curling' Blog has some great tips on how to prevent 'picks' during your games.  Nobody likes picks during their game and the CCA and Danny Lamoureux has a few tips to let you know what you can do to help avoid the dreaded picked rocks.  He lists some of the causes as:

  • Hot feet
  • Dirt
  • Grippers
  • Body parts on the ice

Building YOUR Club

The Tartan prides itself on its great club atmosphere and now has TWO new programs to help build your clubs atmosphere.  The Tartan's membership directory will be back next year and will include an all NEW Yellow Pages section.  Team Clothing with Tartan logo's is another way the Tartan is looking to build your club.

'09-'10 Membership Directory Yellow Pages

In '09-'10 the Tartan's Membership Directory will be back.  The directory will help you find out know who you are playing and help you get in touch with them if you need to.  A new added feature to the directory will be a yellow pages section.  The yellow pages will offer a chance for Tartan members and sponsors to list their companies or workplaces.  They will also offer a great place to find products and services offered by other Tartan members.  If your company or workplace would benefit from a yellow pages listing, contact the Tartan Office.  Tartan members and commercial league members for the '09-'10 season will receive listings for FREE.  If you would like to increase the size or detail of your listing, ask the Tartan office for costs.  Help us Build our directory to so we can help build your clubs atmosphere. 

Tartan Clothing for your Team

If your team is interested in getting new jackets, shirts, or any other clothing the Tartan will help you out.  The Tartan will handle ordering the clothing, cover a portion of the cost and all the Tartan asks in return is a small logo on the item.  Show your club pride with Tartan Team Jackets, Shirts, or event hats.  If you are interested in purchasing new team clothing contact the Tartan Office for more details.  Tartan Golf Shirts, and hats are available now in the pro shop. 

Donison Wins Club Championship

The Club Championships Finals are completed.  When all is said and done The Mike Donison team are Club Champions.  Team Donison defeated the Folk rink in the final in 10 ends.  A rare blanked extra end occured when Donison failed to hold his shooter in the 9th end.  He made no mistake in the 10th end with an open hit for the win.  Congratulations boys!  Listed below are all the winners:

Martin & Achtymichuk Win Canadian Stick Curling Championships

Bill Martin and George Achtymichuk won the 2009 Canadian Open Stick Curling Championships at the event was held at the St. Vital Curling Club.  The Saskatchewan two defeated the Alberta team in an extra end with a in-turn tap back in the extra end.  This title is not the first success at the National level for Martin and Achtymichuk.  They were both members of the 1973 Canadian Brier Championship team.  Congratulations Bill and George.

Team Ackerman Wins Provincial Mixed

The Jason Ackerman rink, out of the Tartan, beat Darren Engel 9-6 in an extra end of the Championship Final at the Provincial Mixed Championship in Weyburn.  Jason Ackerman, Amber Holland, Andrew Foreman and Colleen Ackerman will represent Saskatchewan at the Canadian Mixed next November. 

Team Ackerman defeated Brad Heidt 7-6 Saturday in the A vs B Page Playoff to advance to Sunday's Final.  The Tartan Squad qualified out of the "B" event.  Heidt  won the "A" event Friday. Darren Engel beat Jim Packet in the C1 vs C2 Page playoff to move into the semi-final against Heidt on Sunday morning.

Medius Fire & Flood 24-Hour Bonspiel

The Tartan's 24-Hour Bonspiel is back.  On April 10th and 11th the Tartan held the always popular 24-hour Bonspiel.  One curler stated "This Event was a Bonspiel to Remember!"  The curlers were treated to complementary food and beverages, a LIVE band, great atmosphere and even were Bagpiped onto the ice for the Friday evening games.  All curlers and guests enjoyed live music provided by Celtica a Celtic folk rock band that plays music ranging from traditional Scottish music to modern rock all with a bagpiper.  You can check out Celtica's My Space page here.  The Bonspiel Chair, Chris Krasowski, did an excellent job organizing a top notch event.

Team Schneider Wins Ramada Provincial Juvenile Championship

The Tartan's Team Catlin Schneider won the Ramada Provincial Juvenile Championship in Humboldt Monday March 23rd, 2009.  Team Schneider included Catlin Schneider, Tyler Hartung, Brent Flaman, Jayden Shwaga, and Coach Jamie Schneider.  Team Schneider defeated Kyle Batty, 8-1 in the final of the Championship after winning the A event and defeating Robyn Despins in the A vs B playoff.

The 4th Annual Mighty Geese Charity Classic for MS

The 4th Annual Mighty Geese Charity Classic was another huge success.  We would like to thank all of our sponsors, volunteers and participants. We could not have done it without you. This years event raised over $2000 for the MS Walk which starts from the Tartan on April 26, 2009.  The Tartan was a first class venue and the staff was excellent.  We look forward to continuing this partnership for next years classic.  See you next year.

Law wins the 2008 Horizon Laser Vision Center Classic

Brad Law, Randy Semenchuck, Glen Hill, and Chris Semenchuck have won the Horizon Laser Vision Center Curling Classic at the Tartan.  Law picked a frozen Jordison stone out for the win.  Team Law took home $3000 while Team Jordison settled for $1900.  Law defeated Derek Boe in the Semi-final while Jordison defeated Art Assman.  The other qualifers were Larissa Murray, Mark Lang, Mark Herbert, and Jamie Schneider.
